The name was changed to Middelburg in 1872 as it marks the midway between Pretoria and Lydenburg. Today, Middelburg (en route to the Kruger National Park) is one of the growth points in SA. The town is a large agricultural and industrial centre.
Surrounded by mainly maize and game farms. Middelburg is also known as the Stainless Steel Capital of Africa. Columbus Stainless Steel was constructed in 1965. In conjunction with Thos Begbie & Co (established in 1887) they provide the bulk of the employment in the region.
