Experience 1880 offers self-catering accommodation in this stone house, built in the 1880s and decorated accordingly. The house is situated on a farm, approximately 45 kilometres from the small town of Underberg.(heading in the direction of Kokstad)Accommodation is provided for ten people in five bedrooms, each sleeping two. The house includes a dining room with a fireplace and a large wooden dining table seating 12. The lounge has a lovely large fireplace to keep you warm and piano. There is no electricity. Lamps and beautiful candle chandeliers provide lighting and adds to the historical feel of the house.A wrap around veranda has ample seating and offers beautiful views of the mountains. A separate wooden deck includes a large fire pit which also serves as a braai area.Please note that the house is only accessible by bakkie or 4x4 as the 8km of dirt road is not in the best condition.

Absolute breathtaking views and isolation. We really can't wait to go back and didn't miss the lack of electricity at all

I initially booked at the Experience 1880 as a stop over on the way back to JHB from coffee bay. It is difficult to put in words how we experienced the place and a word that comes to mind is serenity. We just felt comfortable and relaxed from when we arrived to when we left. Everything is picturesque - the misty mornings, the cows and horses, the rooms. We absolutely loved it and wished we could actually stay a few days longer

My Family and I really enjoyed the stay at the house. It was a great break away and the lack of cell coverage was the bonus.

We knew when we booked our stay, that there would be no electricity/coms, but living it was quite an experience indeed: We were forced to talk to each other instead of whatsapp; the kids played boardgames instead of on tablets; they stared at the stars and into the fire, instead of at the TV; we read books instead of facebook updates; and went exploring physically instead of via Google. I would definitely encourage packing in a small torch per person, especially in Winter - it does get dark quite early, and once its dark, it's VERY dark! And perhaps some blitz/firelighters - yes, I know that's cheating, but it does make things a little easier... It was a fabulous experience all around!
