Alpha offers a two-bedroom, en-suite apartment with stone walls in the charming Karoo town of Sutherland on both a self-catering and bed and breakfast basis. The unit is perfect for a family holiday, with one room featuring a double bed and the other room two single beds. In addition, an extra divan in the lounge area can accommodate a fifth person. Features include DStv and a fireplace for those cold winter nights, as well as a garden with barbecue facilities. All rooms also offer electric blankets to fend off the winter night chill. Sutherland is well-known for its large telescope at the observatory, a mere 15 km from town, where day and night tours are also available. The museum, the birthplace of the Afrikaans writers and poets, NP van Wyk Louw and his brother, WEG Louw are worth a visit, as is the Dutch Reform Church, with its beautiful organ and history of the Anglo Boer War.

What a surprise! by

Very nice place to stay within Sutherland. It was a big suprise to see such good accommodation in such a far off place. The place is very clean and comfortable. We will recommend it to any person that wants to visit Sutherland. Breakfast was also very nice.

Alpha Bed and Breakfast is a spacious neat unit that offers great value for money.


Karoo highlands by

Overall it was clean, neat and tidy. However the one toilet did not flush as no water could enter the cistern. This was very distressing. Further the two plate mini-oven was faulty as it could not get hot enough to cook a meal. We had to use our own portable gas stove. It was an eyesore to look.at. The driveway had a huge crater which caused damage to the underside of my car. Ive never seen a driveway entrance like that. Its ok for a 4x4 but not a car! Apart from the above all else was fine. Nevertheless I would never use it again nor recommend it to anyone due to the poor standard of the toilet, stove and driveway entrance.

Being able to sit at fireplace! by

Cottage has everything you need. The electric blanket added to the comfort in the cold! The uneven shower floor could be difficult for older person!
