Banana Island Guest House

Banana Islands, Western Area, Sierra Leone
Guest House from R 645 (family units from R 1,937)
R 645

Banana Island Guest House is located in Dublin, Banana Island, in the Western Peninsula of Sierra Leone. Banana Island comprises three islands, namely Dublin where the guest house is situated, Richettes, and Mes-Meheux which is uninhabited and offers a wealth of stunning flora as well as a variety of bird species. Dublin and Richetts have a population of about 900 inhabitants, and are connected by a strip of sand that is under water at high tide; a stone bridge provides access between the two islands.

The guest house features a restaurant, a fully stocked bar, and three two-bedroom chalets, each containing tiled private baths with running water. Solar light and lanterns provide light in the evenings. The islands were visited in the 17th century, or earlier, by Portuguese sailors and were settled in the late 18th and 19th centuries by freed slaves whose descendants make up most of the population of the islands today. Famous Krio families have held the land title to most of the island for more than 200 years, with the rest of the land community-owned.
