Chembe Eagles Nest

Chembe Eagles Nest

Cape Maclear, Mangochi District, Malawi
Resort from R 134
R 134

Tucked away in a sheltered cove in a lush setting of the African bush, no travel guide or picture can prepare you for the visual experience of colours and textures amidst the smooth untouched bay of Chembe Eagles Nest. It provides a true sense of peace.

The quiet and idyllic chalets all face Lake Malawi under a sheltered thatched patio with a pair of easy chairs to watch the exquisite sunsets. The 11 chalets feature six with double beds and five with twin beds and they are all en-suite with showers. If you are more inclined to outdoor living, the adjoining campsite with spectacular views of the hills and lake will suit you best. Campers have their own wash-up area, braai facilities and beautifully pristine ablutions with ample privacy from the rest of the lodge.

Take a relaxing cruise on our catamaran, Mama Afrika, while sipping on an ice cold gin and tonic, or view the 'butterflies of the lake' as you snorkel through Lake Malawi, and for the more energetic, Chembe offers water skiing and tube riding as well as kayaking.

The far cry of fish eagles as they soar over and the emergence of otters as they feast on nearby rocks, set apart from the hustle and bustle of village life, guarantees a relaxing experience in Cape Maclear.

What can I say..? Awesome, stunning beautiful! Friendly staff, excellent menu's, clean comfortable chalets, stunning sunsets and lots of fun things to do! A holiday to remember...!

Christmas stay by

We arrived at Eagles Nest on Dec 24 and stayed through the 26. You have to drive through a local poor village to arrive at EN, that appears to not be benefiting from the mostly South African lodges that are springing up along the lakes shore of the village. We enjoyed the two twin bed roundville we stayed in that looked out to the lake. Although the shower had absolutely no pressure nor hot water. When I mentioned this to the New Zealand manager she snapped, "Well, if you're swimming in the lake why do you need to wash your hair anyways?!" However, she did have one of the locally hired men fix it and he was very pleasant and wanted me to test it before he left. The food was so so. The starters were very good, but the main courses, especially the vegetables, were overcooked all three dinners we ate there, and were never served on time. The only red wine offered was out of a box and there was a limited selection of beers to choose from - a bit strange for a place that has four stars. Also, the big screened TV on the wall in the "childrens room" right next to the restaurant constantly had the volume turned up so loud it interfered with the ambiance and over powered the music playing. The local staff were clearly uncomfortable and weary whenever the South African (now lives in Blantyre) owner was present, however his wife was lovely and had a calm energy about her. The water and views were beautiful and we definitely relaxed. The biggest negative overall was the uncomfortable and tense dynamics between the owners, manager, and local staff that was tangible and added an unpleasant edge to the experience - especially for a holiday such as Christmas.

Super! by

Great location with fantastic view of the lake. The staff are all really friendly and helpful and the rooms are in a very good condition. We spent 4 nights with our kids and would definitely go again. The food lived up to  the expectations of the manager who said that we would be impressed. All in all a well worth the money. Cheers J.

Chalets on the sand by

We really enjoyed our stay at Chembe Eagles's Nest. It was great to stay so close to the lake and have the beautiful views from our verandah.
