Atlanta Apartments is an upmarket block of four apartments, situated on the sea in sheltered Bali Bay, a five-minute flat walk from the renowned beach and restaurants of Camps Bay.

A spring delight is the frequent visit of the Southern Right whale, although on special days, dolphins and seals can be spotted surfing the waves at any time of the year, and the beach is a magnet for sun-bathers and surfers.

Each apartment offers Weber barbecue facilities, outdoor tables and chairs, luxurious furnishings, colour TV with satellite, a music system and a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and washing machine.

The three-bedroom and penthouse apartments each have their own private pools and the middle floor 2 bed and 1 bed share a pool. All bedding, bath and beach towels are provided and the units are serviced three times a week. Off-street parking in a chained driveway for one car is also available per apartment.

Frustrated by

I was frustrated by a number of things in the apartment, which was very disappointing. We paid a lot of money to rent the apartment, and I don't believe we got what we paid for. The apartment is not at a standard which I would expect in an ?upmarket? apartment. I read one review which was very much similar to our experience, but I chose to ignore the review as there were a few other positive reviews. Unfortunately the negative review was actually the most accurate, and the detail provided by that reviewer was very accurate.

Paul was very responsive during the booking stage, but once we were there, and I sent a couple of emails with concerns, the response was very much lacking. I raised the issues below with him half way through our stay, and he didn't even bother to respond or call to discuss the issues, most of which went unaddressed. We did receive a cutting board and cheese grater the day before our departure after a 10 day stay.

I list below some examples of what I would regard as lacking or not up to the standard I would expect for over R5000 per day.

1. Badly cracked/broken coffee table glass. A corner of the glass coffee table was completely broken off, and the broken piece was just left to balance on the edge. This was a hazard to our children.
2. Firstly there were not enough fans for all the rooms. Once we got a fan for the back room a day later, there was no plug for it. It took a follow up email 4 days later to get a response from Paul.
3. The fan in the front room could not be controlled as the controller is broken off.
4. The general standard of the apartment is lacking. There are cracked tiles everywhere, the bath is cracked and has been fixed with a piece of tape.
5. There are only 3 chairs at the patio table which should seat 4.
6. The kitchen is most definitely not ?fully equipped?. We found it difficult to prepare even the most basic meals with what has been provided. There is no egg beater, cheese grater, cutting board, and the list goes on. I would regard these as basic kitchen items, not items which come with a fully equipped kitchen.
7. There is a major ant problem. When I raised this with Paul, we returned to find a can of Raid on the counter. This is a problem which a can of Raid will not fix. Pest control is required. Our food had been attacked by ants DURING the course of preparation, not after leaving things out.
8. Lack of a coffee machine is disappointing for a upmarket apartment.
9. The thing in the kitchen, which I suspect is the microwave, is like nothing I have ever seen, and we could not figure out how it even works.
10. The kettle lid is broken and came off more than once while pouring boiling water. Extremely unsafe in my opinion.
11. The wifi is extremely sketchy (when it is working). You can only really get a signal in the lounge area, and even then it drops continuously.

We have rented self-catering apartments around the world, and I would say the cost of this apartment is right up there with some of the most expensive we have rented, but unfortunately in terms of amenities, it is well down the list. In fact another apartment which we have rented on 3 separate occasions in Camps Bay is cheaper, but significantly better equipped. In addition I had specifically asked about the road noise prior to making the reservation. Paul's response was that the sound of the ocean often drowns out the road noise. I'm afraid the only time I could actually hear the ocean is when there were no cars about. The road noise is an issue and I was extremely disappointed with this. The one thing I was looking forward to was relaxing with a glass of wine on the balcony or by the pool while the kids swim, but was not been able to do so due to the intrusiveness of the noise from below.

I have to say that the above issues were very disappointing, but even more disappointing was the lack of response from Paul.
