Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm is a working veld management and flower conservation farm, offering three self-catering cottages.

The three sandstone and thatched cottages are fully equipped, with furnishings maintaining historical charm. Gas lamps and lanterns provide lighting and add to the ambiance of the houses. Gas geysers ensure that guests can still enjoy a luxurious warm bath. The kitchens are fully equipped for those who would like to self cater, and for those who want to be spoiled, a three course dinner is prepared and breakfast is served at the main house. Each cottage has an inside hearth and down duvets. Hot water bottles are provided for the cold winter nights.

The variety of activities include hiking, biking and birdwatching. There are 146 different species of bird in the area. Unspoiled fynbos, the largest range of indigenous bulbous plants in the world, San rock art and breath taking canyons will keep visitors intrigued. A private waterfall and natural rock swimming pool provides entertainment close to the cottages.

After a hot day, experience nature by cooling down in one of the natural rock pools of Papkuilsfontein or opt for the farm dam next to your cottage.

It is one of those truly special places where the right combination of warmth, beauty, homeliness and wild have been achieved. The quality of peace and stillness defies description.

One of the best places to stay in SA by

This is an excellent guest farm to visit. Your visit is guaranteed to be relaxing, inspiring and will make you wonder if 'city life' is really more rewarding than the 'country life'. I would recommend staying at least two days. Definitely take your walking shoes and some Karoo lamb chops (available in Clanwilliam). This place is one of the best kept secrets in South Africa.

Beautiful place a must to visit

Stunning setting! Quiet and comfortable stay by

We spent 3 nights at the De Hoop cottage on the Farm at the end of April, and really enjoyed the tranquillity and not having electricity. The cottage is extremely well equipped, it even has a coffee percolator! We had dinner from the farm one evening and it was a really delicious lamb roast with all the trimmings, highly recommend you do this on at least one evening. The hike is really nice, and the scenery is simply amazing. I would recommend you bring a couple of solar lanterns so that you can read at night, and bring plenty of wine! The only issue we had was the mattress was a bit too soft for our liking, but that is a personal preference.

A fabulous farm dinner served by lamplight with a fire burning by

A beautiful stone cottage surrounded by magnificent Karoo scenery. We were well cared for in great comfort. Best breakfast ever served in the morning

Fantastic stay at Papkuilfontein by

We enjoyed the tranquility, privacy and perfect accommodation. The farm offers so many surprises, walks, lovely pools, canyon and more. I shall definitely be back. Compliments to the owners for the neat, authentic and very well equipped houses we stayed in. For any potential guests from Germany: Wir befehlen Papkuilfontein gern - sehr gemuetlich und gut eingerichted. Wunderbare Ruhe Natur mit sehr schoenen Wanderwegen und Rockpools . Einfach entspannen ohne Elektizitaet und Wlan.

Somewhat disappointing by

This was our most expensive self-catering cottage (De Hoop) on a long journey through SA. The description of a 'working sheep farm' sounded charming. Unfortunately, it was actually an severely over-grazed feedlot. Much of the indigenous vegetation has been removed and what had escaped the harrow was clinging to rocky outcrops or on the edge of the property. A walk in any direction entailed crunching over kilometres of sheep droppings, like cocoapops! There is a mole invasion ( perhaps predators have been supressed)munching their way through the 'bulb capital of the world'. The cottage, was charming indeed, spotlessly clean, well furnished with cutesy "luxuries" like water bottles in cable knit pyjamas, towelling bathrobes with branded embroidery, new washing up cloths. You need to know that there is no electricity and although we were told we could recharge phones and kindles at Reception (2km away) there was never anyone at Reception to assist and no phone signal to call. Take a solar recharger with you. Gas facilities were adequate but the lighting (2x gas and many kerosene lamps /candles) was not great and the cottge was dim so evenings and one rainy day were a bit miserable. I cannot vouch for the flower display because it was the wrong time of year, but looking out on the barren, sheep-trodden fields, I would suggest that keen botanists head for the town with day trips to nearby reserves or find an environmentally minded host and cottage. Papkuilsfontein would be a great summer weekend destination for city folk with energetic kids on bikes who want to ride and walk the farm tracks, swim in the water hole and experience an old-fashioned, pretty stone, farm cottage in a very quiet, safe environment.
