Situated in Bethulie, southern Free State, PitchUp SA offers a variety of self-catering accommodation suitable for the overnight or short-stay traveler. Those traveling with pets are especially welcome.

In 1937 the 'Gunn home' was purchased by the Catholic church and for the next 78 years it was used for services and novitiate training.

Huntly & Anne Knowles purchased the property in 2015 - The house reverted back to a private home and the old nun quarters, outbuildings and certain garden areas were upgraded to create simple, affordable accommodation.

Guinea Fowl is a small unit suitable for the single person, a couple or young family.

It can sleep 4 in two inter-leading sleeping areas and has an en-suite bathroom (bath, shower, toilet, hand-basin).

There is also a kitchenette which is equipped with ironing facilities, basic cutlery, crockery, a microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle.

Outdoor braai facilities are available.

Khoisan House is suitable for a family or groups of individuals.

There are 5 private bedrooms each with their own hand basin. (4x Double beds and 1x Single beds)

There are also 3 lockable bathrooms (shower/ toilet/ hand basin) which means a group could have its own dedicated bathroom.

Communal areas consist of a small lounge, basic Dstv and communal kitchen which is equipped with ironing facilities, basic cutlery, crockery, a microwave, fridge, toaster & kettle.

Outdoor braai facilities are available.

The camping area has five vacant sites for tents or small, two-wheeler caravans.

There are also three pre-erected sites, each sleeping two people: "Dikkop & Plover" safari tents and ?Meerkat? caravan.

Every site has an electrical point and a free-standing braai.

?The Shack? services the camping area.

It has two lockable bathrooms (shower/toilet/hand-basin).

There is also a small lounge and a kitchenette with fridge, microwave, toaster & kettle.

Ironing facilities are available.

A fire-pit circle and outdoor wash-up area stand in the middle of the camping area.

Additional showers and a toilet are available if necessary.

What's of interest in the area?

- Boer War history abounds in the Bethulie area.

- The longest road/rail bridge in Southern Africa is on the outskirts of the town and it's a great place to stop and have a sun-downer.

- Fishing

- Kayak on Bethulie dam

- Cycle or walk with your dogs

- Play a game of 9-hole golf or visit the Lawn Bowl Club for a social game

(Wednesdays & Saturdays)

- An evening of classical piano music with Benjamin Fourie can be arranged for small groups.

- Visit Gariep Dam for a boat trip or dam-wall tour

- Visit any one of the three nature reserves which are in close proximity.

- Have a massage

- Relax under a starry night sky

Great value for money by

Bethulie is a quaint little Free-State town, and Pitch-Up is a great budget-friendly self-catering base to explore it from.  We stayed in the "Guineafowl" unit, and the rooms were clean and comfy, and the kitchen well-stocked with utensils and so on.  The camp site also looked great, with a neat kitchen/lounge unit alongside.

The owners are friendly and helpful, and Huntley has a fantastic knowledge of the history of the area, which he is more than willing to share - he took us on some interesting drives to show us the sights.  

A bonus is that Pitch-Up is on the edge of town, and a close drive or walk to Bethulie dam.

We will definitely stay over at Pitch-Up SA again. The accommodation is basic, safe and very neat. The owners are extremely helpful and the service is great.
