Delta Dunes Lodge

Delta Dunes Lodge, "The Wild place by the Sea", is a lodge uniquely combining beach, river and bush to give you an unforgettable experience. Perched on top of miles of rolling, rippling sand dunes with fabulous views overlooking the old delta of the Tana River on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other, al fresco accommodation and a mess area are built in a castaway style but with all the ultimate comforts.

This is the only wetland of its type in Eastern Africa. Explore this phenomenon with incredible bird life, aquatic life and wildlife, coupled with endless miles of vast uninhabited beach that is wild, exciting and extremely beautiful, all to yourself.

The lodge is situated amongst and atop enormous white sand dunes, shaded by doum palms, baobabs and tamarind trees. It looks out to sea across a 20-mile stretch of wide, empty, surf-kissed beach and inland over the extensive estuary of the Tana, a vast playground for hippo, crocodile and other wildlife. Birds of every size and hue abound. The swimming pool, spectacularly positioned a hundred feet up in the dunes, is a delicious cool refuge from the force of the equatorial sun.

Activities at Delta Dunes Lodge include game- and bird-viewing by boat, walking safaris with armed guides, creek fishing, water skiing, surfing, and sand yachting. Other attractions include exceptional bird life, both resident and migrant, concentrations of hippos and crocodile, endemic Tana River bushbuck and buffalo, and lion can occasionally be seen and tracks usually found on game walks.

The lodge works closely with the community and the people of the area. The community is a partner in Delta Dunes Lodge and there is 150,000 acres of conservancy being set aside which will be owned by the community and managed by them, with support from the lodge. Together we aim to improve the standard of living, education, employment and medical assistance in the area. A conservation fee is paid to the community for every guest that stays at the lodge.
