Foster's Manor

Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, South Africa
Guest House from R 295 (family units from R 1,400)

Experience the days gone by of ostrich feathers and feather palaces at Foster's Manor; we are 3 Star graded and offer the embodiment of the era when the ostrich and its feathers reigned supreme in the Little Karoo. Foster's Manor was the only place to be established as a charming B&B and was declared a national monument in 1974 when it was restored to its former glory.

The manor has eight rooms, the character of which is a blend of the old and new. Every room has an en-suite bathroom where one can relax in a French slipper bath. You can also enjoy a drink while watching TV. A stay in the manor's Honeymoon Suite will be the crowning glory of your honeymoon. The spacious interiors have been individually furnished with authentic collector's pieces from the early 1900s. All rooms are fitted with minibars, facilities for making coffee and tea, and TVs. Guests can also roam the ground floor which is decorated with photo reproductions of the feather boom era.

The Great British sandstone architect, Charles Bullock, was the creator of the building; his original plans and documents are displayed in the breakfast room of the manor. J.Foster, a local attorney, instructed Bullock to design a double-storey mansion for him. Foster called this mansion 'Rus in Urbe', formally known as Foster's Folly and later renamed Foster's Manor. We, Agnes and Kahreema, hope that we will have the pleasure of making your acquaintance real soon.

Experience a culinary array of flavours mingling on our cold and hot buffet. Enjoy food from the past like Liver of Lamb Cakes served with a tomato and onion stew, Hake Fishcakes served with a homemade lemon mayonnaise and food from the present like Mushroom Quiche made with a creamy mushroom filling and a soft crumbly crest, Mini Chicken Kebabs smothered in a mustard dressing from a delectable inter-mixture on our buffet. Enjoy, amongst other things, fresh fruit salad or salad platters, freshly baked delicacies, bacon and eggs made to your liking and succulent omelettes with your choice of filling from our menu. Breakfast is served in the breakfast room and in winter you can enjoy your breakfast by the warmth of a fire. During summer, breakfast can be served outside on the patio and one can enjoy the tranquil surroundings and fresh Karoo air. Although we do not serve dinner at the manor, we can make dinner reservations for you at excellent nearby restaurants.

Winter delight by

Amazing staff! Very helpful, excellent accommodation for a delightful lunch and amazing dinner. Very spacious rooms, inviting, full of history.

Historic charm and old fashioned comfort by

Foster's Manor made for a very pleasant stay and provided quite a different experience from a typical tourist hotel. The proprietor was very welcoming and very knowledgeable about the history of the house. The room was very comfortable and it was a plus to be able to sit on the balcony outside the room after a hard day's sightseeing. Breakfast was also in keeping with the tradition of the surroundings. We would not hesitate to recommend the guest house (despite the disadvantage of very sqeaky floorboards!)

Clean and comfortable old world charm by

Effortless checking in and out, even though we arrived really late and left long before sunrise. Staff also arranged a packed breakfast for us, since we missed the included breakfast. Enormous rooms and old world charm. The house itself is in need of renovation, but everything is clean and comfortable. Location super central.

Beautiful historic mansion by

It was a wonderful stay. My mother who is totally obsessed about history and old houses loved it. Massive bedrooms, fantastic staff, yummy breakfast and a surprise car wash :) definitely worth a visit!
