Jo's Guest House in Calvinia consists of a number of comfortable accommodation units. The establishment is graded as 2 Star, but staff pride themselves on rendering 5 Star service.

Hantamkraal Restaurant is a new addition to the business and is already very popular. This unique 60-seater restaurant with open fire prides itself on its traditional cooking, which includes the best tripe and bobotie in Namakwaland, lamb pie baked in tin cups and delicious baked puddings. Hantamkraal also offers a catering and full event management service for functions with up to 2000 guests.

Jo's Guest House and Hantamkraal Restaurant is close to the scenic Akkerendam Nature Reserve and is within walking distance of most of Calvinia's tourist attractions.

Owner Jo Fritz puts in tremendous effort to ensure that guests' needs are taken care of and the establishment was voted a finalist in the Northern Cape Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in 2009 and 2010.

Disappointing by

Whilst the clean rooms and decor of Jo's Guest House is pleasing to the eye, there are factors which made our stay very unpleasant. We booked three rooms - the roof had leaks and two of the rooms had water constantly dripping down - in our room on the bed. Two of the rooms had no globes in the bedside lamps. The TVs in two of the rooms were not in working order. One room did not have a kettle, so no actual coffee/tea facilities. The braai facility advertised on the website is right next to building rubble and was, therefore, very dirty. The owner did apologise for all of this, but the damage has been done as we cannot recommend this guest house as it is now.

We had a comfortable, clean and friendly but very expensive stay. I do not believe the guest house is worth the  money paid. I sincerely don't hope the rates are increased so dramatically because of some special occasion in town.

Like for like this guest house is heavily overpriced.  Breakfast was really of poor quality.

 I would recommend management/owner to take heed - because as a proud SA citizen would definitely recommend you if you fall in line with equivalent guest houses.
