The name Kenosis is the underlying vision that determines the life of the community. Kenosisis a Greek word that means emptying, RSV, or making oneself nothing NIV. In Philippians two: Five to seven the word is used to summarize what the attitude of Jesus was towards life and others people and how this should be a model for Christian Communities. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus - who, being in the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
Kenosis has three general objectives, while the different projects have their specific ones. To live as a Christian Community and to accept and respect one another despite different cultures and backgrounds. To serve God by serving one another, our different churches as well as the Pietermaritzburg/Bishopstowe community in which we live.
The Kenosis Retreat centre is an income generating project in that all profits made will flow into the work with vulnerable children and children orphaned by HIV and AIDS.
