Lake Natron Tented CampLake Natron, , Tanzania Tented Camp from R 3,028 (family units from R 3,634) | R 3,028 |
Wild and remote Lake Natron lies in the north east of Tanzania, in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains. Here you'll find Lake Natron Tented Camp, a luxurious affair situated amongst spectacular scenery. Unique in its setting, Lake Natron Tented Camp is set back in a grove of trees slightly removed from the dusty terrain of the lake. Clean safari tents offer showers, comfortable beds and a private verandah, while a fully stocked bar and candlelit restaurant ensure guests have a cold drink and delicious food at the end of an arduous climb or long day's walking.
Situated at the base of Africa's only active volcano in the great Rift Valley, Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. Home to millions of tiny crustaceans, the lake is a haven for literally thousands of lesser flamingos and it is one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth. Here it is the landscape rather than the animals that is the attraction - the area around the lake inhabited by Masai is dry, desolate and hauntingly beautiful.
For many of our guests, a Lake Natron excursion and climbing Oldonyo Lengai is the main highlight and achievement of their stay. No special equipment is required, but it is a hard climb to the top through notoriously spiky vegetation. You will however be rewarded with some spectacular magma flows bubbling at over 500°C at the top. If a slightly less demanding walk would suit you, we can arrange for a walk followed by either a picnic breakfast or sundowners by the lake. There is also a nearby freshwater waterfall where you can swim, cool off and simply relax.
