Spoiling the ship for a ha'porth of tar by

The house was OK but the swimming pool was disgusting. It obviously hadn't been cleaned for ages, and, as it turned out, the Kreepy Krawley didn't work properly. The agent arranged for the pool people to attend about 1 hour after we got access. They obviously didn't know where the pump and controls were, ineffectively brushed for 1/2 hour and then threw a half bottle of chlorine in to the pool, telling us we shouldn't use it for a day. In spite of being warned off by the agent, I managed, over the course of our stay, to get the pool into a state where one could actually swim. I did ask if the pool was heated, only to be told "if you wanted a heated pool, we would have charged you more" The pool was solar heated, but the by pass was open so that the influence of the solar heating was not used. I didn't tell the agent just in case!!
