Melrose Game Farm

Khomas Hochland, , Namibia
Guest House, Self-catering from R 120 (family units from R 1,200)
R 120

Melrose is a farm with tradition from the pioneer days. It is nestled in a unique landscape on the edge of the Khomas Hochland, where the landscape varies from plains to hills and mountains. The farmhouse has a nearby dam and is approximately 2000 m above sea level.

The owner of Melrose was the renowned pioneer named Frank James Bassingthwaighte, born in 1820 and deceased in 1888. The main house has a comfortable and welcoming lounge area with an open fireplace, terraces, a well-kept garden, swimming pool, fitness room and a stylish restaurant with its fully licensed Cheetah Bar and grill.

There are many activities on offer for either the outdoor adventurer or those just preferring to relax in tranquil surroundings. Our activities on offer include swimming, horse riding, coach riding, hiking, mountain climbing, game drives, billiard, badminton and a children's playpen to occupy the young. The nearby dam attracts many bird species and game can be observed from raised or concealed hides.

Windhoek is close by and lends itself to sightseeing. The hot springs of Rehoboth Reho-Spa can be reached in under an hour. Day tours to Gamsberg and Namib Naukluft Park can be arranged on request.

Campers beware by

Campers must avoid this venue at all costs. We surprised everyone on the premises by arriving. The camp site has been used as a cow camp and you have to make space amongst the cow pats to pitch a tent. Ground is covered in Acacia thorns and we spent a lot of time clearing a spot. Overgrown campsites haven't been cleaned or tended to for months. Left after one night, forfeiting the second for a better camp in Windhoek. Main gate was locked. Had to drive back to main building to get a key to let ourselves out. Photos you see on advert were taken 10 years ago at least.

Better to avoid by

The rooms are really outdated and the bathroom in rally bad condition. The toilets were barely working and the water from the tab was brownish...

Excellent place for camping by

Beautiful location with private waterhole. Good lodge close by but not well known and there with empty when we stayed there. The picture used in the advert is not recognized. Arie, the local person helpIng at the campsite, was very friendly, helpful and doing a great effort to make a stay a great experience.
