Mountain Rock Cottage is situated in Barberton which is nestled in the heart of the Makhonjwa Mountainlands in the De Kaap Valley; one of the oldest regions and the core of a proposed World Heritage Site. The cottage has a main bedroom with a double bed and a children's bed, and the second bedroom has a single bed. The loft area has twin beds and all rooms have built-in cupboards and linen. There is a boma equipped with a braai and fireplace supplied with wood. The children's playground is close to the boma and there is also a cold outside shower to cool down on those hot days. There are many activities to be enjoyed within the area such as some great birdwatching opportunities, self-drive 4x4 routes, hiking, fishing and mountain biking. There is also the chance of seeing small game such as kudu, impala and bushbuck on walks. Pet friendly.

Mountain Rock Cottage by Chris Vdmerwe, South Africa 30 May 2013 There was no signboard to the cottage. On arrival, we found the cottage had not been cleaned after the last guests vacated. The fridge and microwave were spattered with food, left over food in the fridge. The bedding was filthy although they had been straightened. I don't think the bathroom mat has ever been washed The owner by his own admission said the previous guests had promised to clean the cottage. Only 2 Mozambicans on the property who don't speak English. The cottage looks out onto their old caravans in which they live. The owner did not show up although he said he would sort it out. Booked for 2 nights but stayed only 1 night because of the state of the cottage. Obviously there is no supervision there or no one cares.Establishment's response Dear Chris vd Merwe
First of all, sorry about the "state" in which you found the cottage, my apologies.
Just a few comments.
We did not fit any signboards to the cottage due to the fact that we keep it secluded and out of reach of the general public to ensure privacy to the guests utilizing the cottage. Co-ordinates are available on the website.
After inspection I found that the cottage was cleaned after the previous guests. All beds have various sets of bedding and get changed as soon as guests depart.
The food in the fridge was left by previous guests and they instructed the cleaners not to remove it as they were returning the morning of your arrival to remove it.
If you investigated further you would have found a new wooden house on stilts that was built for my 2 "Mozambicans".
I would also appreciate it if some dignity will be shown to other persons belongings and not leave the cottage in a turmoil because you are not happy.
We have various guests that keep on returning, from Gauteng, the Lowveld, Sabi Sands etc. and in the few years that the cottage is operational never had a bad review.
In future please do not check-in if you are not completely satisfied with accommodation, please forward me your bank details and I will reimburse for the 1 night that the cottage was not utilized.
Regards

The peace and quiet of the surroundings by Karina Rossouw 31 January 2018 Beautiful little house with an awesome stoep & braai / entertainment area. Die Natuurskoon is baie mooi by Arn De Kock 11 June 2018 Ons verblyf was nie baie aangenaam nie .
Fireside family time by Anton Kruger 10 July 2018 What an amazing place to stay! Appreciated the quick responses to booking requests, and Hennie's friendly calls and advice. We enjoyed the rock cottage with it's large stoep and loft for the kids to sleep in, but the great boma and unlimited supply of firewood was the biggest treat for me personally. The kids liked the play area and next time (when it's slightly warmer) we'll try the outside shower area! Excellent value for money. First class braai facilities! by Anton And Saskia Boonzaier 31 August 2018 We had a very pleasant stay and a perfect stopover. Ernst was extremely helpful and a great host.
