The iSimangaliso Wetland Park was declared South Africa's first World Heritage Site in 1999. It includes over 100 km of pristine coastline, stretching from St Lucia to the Mozambique border, and includes 38 000 hectares of lake, numerous islands and an estuary supporting a variety of habitats including the Lebombo Mountains, grasslands, forests, wetlands, mangroves and vegetated dunes, with magnificent beaches and coral reefs. This natural diversity creates an environment which is a birdwatcher's dream, with more than 500 species to be found in the area.
