Large country house by

We spent a week at Klein Moerbei in February; the house was a comfortable homebase. We really enjoyed the use of the vegetable garden for our fresh homemade dinners. The resident dogs were our new friends, welcoming us home after our days of exploring Stellenbosch. Pamela, the housekeeper, was a delight to visit with in the mornings. We found the kitchen to not be as well-appointed as one would expect from an upmarket self-catering accommodation. Since the microwave was the standin for an oven, ideally there would have been more microwave safe dishes to use. Also, in light of the generous use of the garden, some large serving bowls would have been welcome. The closed-circuit security cameras in the kitchen and hallways were intrusive. The house smelled like it had been closed for months, there was a noticeable damp, mildew smell. We left the windows open most of the day to air it out.

As usual, the accommodation was impeccable.  The weekend was spent making wonderful home cooked meals in the beautifully equipped farm house kitchen (including strawberry smoothies made with fresh strawberries picked from the veggie garden).  The kids spent long hours in the gorgeous heated swimming pool, playing soccer in the garden and exploring the surrounding vineyards.  For an unplugged tranquil weekend, Moerbei is at the top of my list of places to escape to.
