Off Road Adventures Self-catering Lodges are proud to announce that we have just added Casa de Lua to our portfolio - a stunning resort of self-catering villas set on the tranquil white sands of Vilanculos Beach. Casa de Lua comprises seven luxury self-catering houses.

All the bedrooms include linen, as well as mosquito nets and fans. The kitchenettes feature gas stoves, freezers, fridges and washbasins, and all crockery and cutlery are included, along with barbecue tongs, pots, pans and kettles. The living and dining areas are open-plan, while the spacious verandahs offer unparalleled views of the Bazaruto Archipelago and the surrounding waters.

A mere 50 m from the beachfront, the resort offers spectacular views and easy access to the pristine ocean surrounding the Bazaruto Archipelago Islands. Built in the local vernacular of timber and grass, the units offer relaxed living, sleeping between six and eight guests. The tranquil setting of Casa De Lua offers a freshwater swimming pool and a central lapa with a bar and barbecue facilities, with covered parking for vehicles provided underneath the houses.

Offering a wide variety of entertainment for the family, the location is perfectly suited for boating, snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, scuba diving and other water activities. Guests also have a choice of prime fishing destinations, both north and south of the main islands. Besides this, there are a host of other things to do, from camel rides on the beach to island hopping trips, seasonal whale and dolphin watching, or simply relaxing.

Not great, - unfortunately by

I read a few very positive review of this place before we went, and therefore choose this place for our holiday. However, I should wish that I would have had a better understanding of this place before making our decision of where to stay in Vilanculos - therefore I write this review so that others will have more information than I did. On the positive side: the daily manager, Nick, was very nice and friendly and did what he could to make our stay as pleasant as possible. The houses are situated in nice surroundings, and have pleasant garden and a fairly large, partly shaded swimming pool (nice when it is hot). The houses are spacious and the kitchens fairly well equipped. Now on the negative side: I would say that this place is overpriced for what it is. It is run down and in need of upkeep. The houses are dark inside. The are no closed walls and the place is full of mosquitos. After dawn we had to sit in our beds, inside the bednets, not to be eaten up by mosquitos. However, much we tried to prevent it, my children still got lots of mosquito bites. Because there are no walls you can here what others are doing, including the TV of the two houses that have them, fairly well. The pool would have much nicer had it been painted. (Paint is peeling of the side). A guest entering the pool with clothes and shoes and thereafter washing his shoes in the pool was probably just unlucky both for us as guest and the owners. And a few details I found fairly bizarre. Here was no hand soap. Having paid 11400 rand for four nights I was sure that this was a simple mistake. However, when I asked I was told that we would have to pay for our own soap. No big problem, and the manager was even very helpful and bought for soap us (we paid), but for me this was just another indication that the place is overpriced. Also, and perhaps some of the most important: the beach there really isn't that great. There were sharp stone, which made it fairly unsuitable for children, and when there were low tides you would have to walk for a long time (one day for about 20 - 30 min) to reach water. There is also quite a bit of alges in the sea and boats park in front of the hotel. Still - the houses in the front have sea view, which is very pleasant. The best thing about the place is that you can get to the island fairly easily. However, when I checked around I found that the boat trip that Casa de Lua offered was more expensive for our family of 5 then others were AND they didn't offer and lunch (so basically, you can get cheaper and better deals elsewhere). All in all, we had some nice days at Casa de Lua, and the trip to the island was a memory for life. However, unfortunately I personally would not recommend this place to my friends. Still, others, with different expectations, and people more prepared to "rough it", might feel that this is just the thing for them. ESTABLISHMENT RESPONSE: My immediate view is that Casa de Lua is too rustic for the holiday they as Diplomats were expecting and especially with 3 young girls We did our best to meet their needs and I did warn her in earlier correspondence that we had Mosquitos and most people locally have said the Mozzies were bad this year. Again the beach and rocks goes with the isolation and attractiveness but with games for small kids maybe not so suitable. Archipelago resort which has the best sandy beach in Vilanculos similarly priced but also high roofs and open spaces. On arrival I could see they expected more luxury and by putting them in Casa 2 for one night would compensate for being at the middle back initially The alternative boat trip was with a Dohws Safaries company which provides food but the boat was much smaller than ours and was cheaper overall. However was disappointing that they were so disappointed.
