The quaint little town of Ponta do Ouro is situated in Southern Mozambique, a mere 10 km away from the South African border. Ponto do Ouro or "Point of Gold" gets its name from the fact that early Portuguese explorers were misled by unreliable maps, thinking that gold might be found there.

Upon arrival they found that the dunes were rich in black titanium, and the only gold in the area was the colour of the setting sun shining over the long white beaches. Essentially, this area is an extension of South Africa's Maputaland, but far more pristine. The historical truth might never be known, but the modern day value of what is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt bays in the world can certainly lay claim to golden treasures.

The Praia Do Dorado is situated in the town of Ponto do Ouro, surrounded by sea, sand, dunes, and casuarinas trees, and rated as one of the top 10 attractions in Africa. It is also known as the best resort town in Mozambique. There is a very traditional open-air market, several "cantinas" or little shops, and eager curio sellers who will quench your thirst for shopping before you make your way to one of the rustic restaurants in town.

The Praia Do Dorado house offers two bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a lounge, fully-equipped kitchen, balcony, and amazing sea views. The property has electricity and hot, clean water, as well as a full day cleaning and laundry service. A full day house manager is also available.

Wonderful view by

The view is wonderful. After adjusting to no TV or radio, we enjoyed the stay. Be ready to climb a lot of stairs.

Rustic and comfortable by

We enjoyed Praia Do Dorado very much. Good clean, affordable, value for money accommodation.

The view and location of the house was very good by

* There is no DSTV as advertised * The braaier is falling apart and the is no grid to braai on * Curtain rails where broken and failing of * One room had no globes for lights *

Great Location, House Needs a Lot of Work by

The location is perfect and Ponto Do Oura is fantastic but there are a lot of big issues with the house. On arrival the floor had obviously just been varnished or something because the floor was so sticky you couldnt wear sandles inside. A pair of mine broke because they stuck to the floor. I had to wear trainers or just go barefoot. When I was barefoot whatever it was stuck to my feet which meant all the sand stuck to my feet and was impossible to get off. It was a nightmare. My mom also broke her toe on a boat and found it very difficult to walk at all inside. The upstairs main bedroom sliding door came off the sliding thing completely which meant we could close the huge glass door at all, it almost fell over and broke a few times because we could only lean it against the other side of the door. This is really not acceptable to not be able to close your door. The hot water in that same rooms shower didnt work so my mom had to come and shower in mine. Also the shower curtain was so old and dirty and falling off. The sheets looked very old and there was even a blood stain on my moms pillow. When I asked the maid, the security or the guy looking after the house to help with the door none of them did anything. The gas stove turn things dont work properly so the only way to tell if the gas was off was to light a match next to it and see if it lit or not. I understand Ponta is far away so didnt expect perfection but not being able to walk downstairs, know if the gas was off, close the outside door to the main bedroom, have hot water in the main bedroom or clean sheets is simply not okay at all. We definitely expect some sort of a refund. Once you are there there is no-one to help you at all.

Great position in Ponto by

Great, simple little spot but a fair number of stairs. Great views of the point and bay. Was clean and neat and perfect for our surf trip getaway. We really appreciated for helpful Juao (manager) was and his assistance who came in daily to clean etc.
