This busy little town is home to one of the richest gold-producing parts of the world. One of the town's major mines is called Western Deep Levels as it is one of the world's deepest mines. Surrounded by a further seven mines, the town of Carltonville's saving grace is in the Abe Bailey Nature Reserve that lies just outside of it. This grassland is a sanctuary of wetland, where birdwatching is well rewarded with the prospect of seeing at least 60 species on any given morning, as well as being a lovey shady picnic site for day visitors.
