Sterboom Guest House is a self-catering house, situated close to the town of Sutherland. It's also one of the coldest towns in the country with frequent snow falls during winter. Sterboom Guest House is named after the unique endangered veld plant which is called Star Cliffortia/Cliffortia Arborea. It is confined to the mountains around Sutherland on a southern peak, high up in the mountains.
The house consists of a fully equipped open-plan kitchen living area/ that is gas operated, and an indoor braai and fireplace with firewood on request. The two spacious rooms can sleep up to seven guests maybe 8. On offer is the opportunity to experience a working Karoo farm, hiking trails, some game roaming around and spectacular sunsets, all with warm Karoo hospitality. Please note only 1 bathroom.
The house offers Wi-Fi and solar power. There are no wall plugs and no TV. There is only MTN signal close by. Please bring your own towels.
Sutherland is also close to the sites of unique corbel houses. Corbel houses are only found in this region in and around the towns of Fraserburg, Williston and Carnarvon. They almost look like stone beehives and were built from flat stones common to the area where wood was not available.
Mention the town of Sutherland and most people will know that this is the place where people go to look at the skies. It's where one can marvel at the star scopes that sweep the outer limits and where astronomers come to use the telescopes of the South African Astronomical Observatory.
