Selous Wilderness CampSelous Game Reserve, , Tanzania Safari from R 5,204 | R 5,204 |
Selous Wilderness Camp is situated along the edges of the wide, meandering Rufiji River which is one of the largest water systems in East Africa. With its associated wetlands, lakes and swamps, it is one of the most outstanding ecological systems in the whole of Eastern Africa. Due to this unique ecosystem, the Selous Game Reserve was designated as a World Heritage Site.
The home comforts of the Selous Wilderness Camp with its seven traditionally styled and spacious tents, the plush mess area with an eclectic mixture of solid wood furniture and leather sofas, and the attentive Tanzanian hospitality and service provided to the guests belies the isolation and wilderness of the camp's location. The seven spacious en-suite tents are under expansive makuti thatch structure, all with views over the Rufiji River. There is a 20 m distance between the tents ensuring privacy and exclusivity. Each tent is traditionally styled and equipped with a fan and outside shower.
Covering approximately 50,000 square kilometres, the Selous is one of the largest protected areas in the world and also Africa's oldest protected area. With its diverse habitat, the northern photographic tourism sector is one of the most beautiful and game-rich areas of this whole ecosytem. Three-quarters of the Selous consists of woodland of various types, short grassy plains and seasonally flooded pans. Selous is home to many animals including elephants, buffalo, hippopotamuses, wild dogs and lions. Although the Selous is best known for its spectacular mammals, it is equally celebrated for its abundant and varied bird life.
The river scenery around the camp is made all the more spectacular by dense riparian forests dotted with groves of borassus palms with their majestically swaying fronds. The Selous is probably Africa's least known and wildest protected area, rich in game and varied habitat. Here our guest's experience game viewing away from the maddening crowds, off the beaten track of the more well-worn safari circuits and from three distinctively different perspectives - on foot, by boat and by vehicle. Selous Wilderness Camp offers half and full-day river safaris, game drives and walking safaris with the occasional surprise bush picnic.
