Set on 2,200 acres of Free State mountain farmland, St Fort is a sandstone farmhouse built in 1913 that has been lovingly restored into a luxurious and comfortable guest house. It is situated 5 km from Clarens, in a stunning setting surrounded by mountains.

St. Fort offers five en-suite bedrooms, divided into two separate units. The smaller unit features two bedrooms with its own lounge, kitchen, veranda and garden, while the larger unit has three bedrooms with its own lounge, kitchen, veranda and garden. There is also a garden cottage with a self-contained kitchen and full bathroom. We accept bookings for individual rooms, either of the units, or for the whole house when friends or families wish to gather. Antique furniture, DStv and all the comforts of home are what make this holiday destination truly unique in the area.

St Fort offers short hikes as well as the Mushroom Rock Trail, bird-viewing, and mountain biking in the area. The Mushroom Rock Trail is a gentle two-hour walk which takes you all along the Little Caledon River, where there are many inviting spots to have a picnic or just to sit down and relax before starting the gradual climb up the mountain to the famous Mushroom Rock from where one can behold the splendour of the magnificent view.

Ons was die naweek van die 19de Oktober 2012 by St Fort Country House. Dit was 'n wonderlike naweek. Dit is een van die mooiste omgewing waarin ek nog gebly het. Die ontbyt was heerlik en die atmosfeer so rustig. Kamers is groot en netjies met baie gemaklike beddens. Ek sal St Fort hoogs aanbeveel.

Fabulous! by

We spent an awesome four days at St Fort. We stayed in the attached self-catering cottage, which was perfectly adequate for us in terms of kitchenette. Wonderful bed and beautifully finished. Ernestine was charming,helpful and kind. Beautiful country gardens within the property. What a peaceful and restful location! Thank you for sharing it with us. Although we used the directions suggested by safarinow through Reitz/Bethlehem, to approach Clarens, I would recommend the route through Harrismith and Golden Gate - a breathtaking entrance to the area with the stunning mountain drive. We would love to return again and again.

Tranquil Weekend Away by

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at St Fort. We booked the Garden Cottage and it has everything we need. It is a few km away from Clarens centre but it is peaceful and the view outside is breathtaking. It is close to some really good hiking trails, we did the Mushroom Trail it is one of the best highlights for our weekend away. Friendly staff and all the small touches in this place are magical. A hidden gem in Clarens.




Beautiful, Spacious and Relaxed by

I very much enjoyed my stay at St. Fort. The place is lovely and spacious and offers a really relaxing environment for anyone who wants to relax. Loved it and will definitely visit again.

Lovely gardens and fantastic hiking trails by

What a lovely location, just a short distance from Clarens, and MUCH nicer than staying in town! Our host, Ernestine, has done a brilliant job of turning this family farm into a gorgeous wedding venue, with innumerable fantastically photogenic spots! Even just the gardens themselves are so beautiful and so relaxing to meander through. We weren't here for a wedding, but it was also just a great self-catering spot for our family. The hiking was an unexpected bonus; the trails with bridges and ladders VERY well maintained, were a great added attraction! We did the Mushroom Rock Trail. The self-catering unit is actually an annex to the rambling, beautiful farm house that is shown in the photo. This unit was a tiny let-down after a previous night's stay at Poplar Grove Farm House where we had the WHOLE gorgeous farm home to ourselves (and that for a lesser price than this!) Cost-wise, I think the self-catering family unit is overpriced, considering it is quite a bit more than double the cost of the 2-sleeper cottage at St Fort. That being said, it was fine, and the king-sized bed was luxuriously cozy. We really appreciated both Ernestine and Sophia taking the time to answer questions and provide some history for St Fort. Part of what we have enjoyed about the many different places we have stayed in South Africa is the history, and the history of St Fort is indeed interesting. It would be nice to have a small brochure highlighting some of the history of this family farm and its transformation into a guest home/wedding venue, over the 60+ years it has been in the family. Also, a brochure of the hiking trails would be great. Regards, Wendy
