?The west coast is like a high powered internet connection to your soul. It is wild, rugged, tempestuous and untamed and any time spent here will lodge itself in the feel good centres of your being.? Coast to Coast Guide
This straw house, designed by Matthew Beatty, and built by the Burgers epitomizes relaxation. The thick bale walls protect from the relentless winds, keeping the rooms cool in the hot dry summers and warm in the cold winters. A teak sliding door & folding sliding window opens the living / kitchen area into a tranquil court yard. The bedroom area is joined by a North African style ?chill out? area to the south and an outside bath house to the north. The modern design is softened through the use of simple fittings and natural building materials, creating the ultimate location to unwind.
The house is located in Elands Bay, on the West Coast of South Africa, about 3 hours drive to the North from the City of Cape Town and its international airport.
Evidence still exists of life from as many as 20000 years ago in this area. People from all around the world are still drawn by the harshness and beauty. Clear your mind on the endless stretch of beach, be hypnotized by the flawless swell lines that wrap into the bay and break perfectly down the left hand point, spend hours watching the amazing array of mammal and bird life along Verloren vlei or indulge in an evening of ?brandy and coke? with the local potato farmers in the infamous Elands Bay hotel.
