Self-catering (family units from R 1,500)

Stuurmansfontein Corbelled House is situated near Carnarvon in the Karoo and has been restored to its former glory to provide guests with an experience of the way life was over 200 years ago. This National Monument offers guests three bedrooms; two furnished with double beds and the other room with two single beds.

The shared bathroom features a large wash basin for bathing and water needs to be boiled for hot water, while the outdoors shower only has cold water. Water is pumped from the fountain to the house with the use of a "windpomp" and the house has a modern flush toilet, as well as a long-drop away from the house. The kitchen is fully equipped, with a Dover stove and a gas fridge and stove. Guests can also relax in the lounge and enjoy the old world feel of the Corbelled House or do their cooking or have a barbecue in the asbosskerm, which is only found in the Karoo.

The Corbelled House is available for self-catering or bed and breakfast and dinner is available on request. Situated on a farm, guests have wide open space to go for walks or cycle along the paths, while the lack of electricity ensures that guests will enjoy beautiful starry nights. For absolute peace, tranquility and security, no better retreat will be found than Stuurmansfontein Corbelled House.

Best night of our tour by

The place, accommodation, food and everything else was really fantastic. A big thank-you to Vharmaine & Piet for sharing this remarkable part of history with us.

Beautifully preserved, wonderfully isolated by

We had a wonderfully relaxing time. The house is preserved really well and it felt like we were back in 1930s with no electrics or phone signal. Upside is we could see a million stars and get back in touch with nature. I would recommend a good car though as the place is down a farm road which needs some off-road steering. Although, to be fair we had 3 people in a VW polo and just made it as we had an experienced off-road driver. All in all, it was an awesome experience; makes you appreciate nature and a great place to clear the head. Already planning my next visit!

Exceptional place by

Wow .. wonderful place ..,lots of detail even fresh flowers in house .. very safe ... will be back again soon

Comforts of old by

What a special place! It's about as remote as one can imagine so the sense of peace and relaxation is profound. The house is quirky and old and we had to adapt especially in the kitchen to no electricity or plumbing and just an outside tap but very quickly it all seemed natural and charming (there is gas for cooking, fridge and hot water and plumbing in the bathroom). It is a very comfortable house with much care taken with the decor. Our only difficulty was no cupboards to unpack clothes into but for a short stay this was a small issue. Charmaine supplied a most delicious picnic basket of supplies for supper one evening. Piet and Charmaine were very charming hosts and ?very close? should we need anything - their farmhouse is 5km away so all relative to this city dweller. We want to return for longer next time.

great hospitality and location by

The house is beautifully restored and decorated. One has everything one needs. The location is amazing. The owners were very friendly and helpful and even organized meat for our braais. The lack of cell phone reception did not bother us at all and we were not far from the owners house but still very private.

Romantic stay in the Karoo by

A remote and private but very special place about 4 km away from the farmhouse. Ideal for a 2 Night stay (or longer if used as a base for exploring the Karoo) on self catering basis. Arrive early and consider driving time of nearly one hour from Carnavon. A historic building but with modern comforts.
