Way out on the wine route is the The Windmill Country Retreat, including Sabie Valley Rider Academy. Set on 22 hectares of malaria-free indigenous bush with abundant bird-life, it is the ideal base from which to explore the area or merely relax and unwind. The location is extraordinary, overlooking the Sabie River Valley, and beyond to God's Window and the Drakensberg, with the Kruger National Park and the panoramic Blyde River Canyon just around the corner. Activities and adventures are available from mild to wild in and around the Sabie Valley. The owner-run property includes free-standing cottage accommodation, a wine shop, motorcycle events and tours, and a BMW rider academy. Windmill Wine Shop is open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and a small but unique selection of Cape wines is available, changing regularly according to wine trends in a relaxed buying atmosphere with knowledgeable advice at hand. Always enthusiastic supporters of South African micro brewers, a small selection of South African Craft Beers are available including the local Sabie Brewing Co. selection.

THE WINDMILL COUNTRY RETREAT REVIEWS (84 %) great place, beautiful room, and AMAZING breakfast by Audrey Nahmias, France 26 September 2005 We had a very good time at 'The Windmill Wine Cottages' : rooms are beautifully decorated, we particularly want to thank Jacqui & Thomas for their warm hospitality. Last but not least, the breakfast was the best breakfast we had in years: AMAZING, scrumptious Breakfast!!! Wonderful tranquility by Anonymous 11 April 2006 We enjoyed our stay at the Windmill Wine Cottages tremendously. It is set in a superb, beautiful location and the scenery is amazing. The room was also beautiful, tasteful and very comfy. Miranda Hilgersom, Netherlands 06 December 2016 Yes it was clean and comfortable, but everytime they clean the lodge they change al your stuff. They replaced all our important things and they even hang some clothes in the closet. We never use the closet and we didn't put it there so only because we were missing things on the day we had to check out we started to look there. Why do you touch other people stuff??.. Establishment Response: Thank you for taking the time to review. Sorry to hear the housekeeping ladies ?over-cleaned', I'm sure they just wanted to tidy up in order to clean properly and didn't mean to upset you, but I'm glad you found the Windmill Cottages ?clean and comfortable? never-the-less. Kindest, Jacqui Beautiful views by Vanessa Ververis 17 April 2017 beautiful view when sitting on the porch. Saw mongoose, monkeys and duikers in the week we where there while eating breakfast. The cleaners cleaned really well, put out fresh towels everyday and were so friendly-which was lovely.
The guards are so helpful and friendly.
The quality of the chalets are great.
The owner was helpful when I called or emailed prior to our visit and answered any query we had.
Cons: 1)we never had a welcome from the owner nor did she pop by at any point to see if we were ok or needed anything- we never saw her.
2)We'd booked 2 chalets- the 4 bedroom was amazing however the 3 bedroom cottage was very disappointing as the rooms are not connected- this meant that we were forced to leave one room totally unoccupied and the parents had to split up and sleep with the children in the 2 rooms as clearly you can't leave your children aged 5-11 on their own in a room that you can only access by leaving your room, walking on the outdoor porch ( as the rooms all share the porch) and entering the room. This was most unsuitable as you don't get to spend quality time with your partner as you are in separate rooms.
3)And lastly both our rooms did not have a bottle opener so we had a lovely bottle of wine on the first evening and we couldn't open it. THE WINDMILL COUNTRY RETREAT LOCATION
