Kosi Bay, in the far north eastern corner of KwaZulu-Natal, is a system of four lakes ranging from freshwater to saline, that feed into the ocean at the mouth. It forms part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park - a natural World Heritage. Age old traditions, passed down by generations of tribal existence, still continue to this day, such as ancient fishing kraals/utshwayelos erected and tendered by the resourceful Thonga people. Kosi Bay has been described as 'a wonderful aquarium and the most gorgeous aviary'.Utshwayelo Lodge and Camp, a community owned project, is the most north eastern accommodation in South Africa. We are the closest lodge in Kosi Bay to the sea and are situated at the entrance gate to the Kosi Bay Mouth Reserve and Estuary, 2.5 km from the beach. We are easily accessible in a sedan and are 5 km from the Mozambique border. Walk down and wade around the traditional fish traps and snorkel in the estuary with its kaleidoscope of over 200 species of tropical fish, surf from unspoiled beaches, boat on the magnificent lakes, or fly fish from the rocks. Do the turtle walk and watch big turtles lumbar out of the ocean to lay eggs on the beach, and little ones scampering back into the sea, from October to March. Take a guided hike or walk kilometres of pristine bush and beach, and swim in turquoise waters ? or just read a book under magnificent ancient Umdoni trees next the swimming pool and enjoy a sundowner at the bar. Utshwayelo Lodge and Camp has it all ? experience life with us in paradise.
